About The Event
NAVO Presents: Celebrating Women Composers, and will perform a program of music by celebrated Women Composers from around the world for various chamber music settings.
The highlight of the concert will be a world premiere by Kansas-based composer Ingrid Stölzel's "To One Beyond Seas" performed by soprano Sarah Anderson Tannehill, pianist Ellen Sommer, and violinist Véronique Mathieu.
There is no better time to celebrate women composers than on Mother’s Day weekend!! For this occasion, Kansas-based composer Ingrid Stölzel was commissioned by NAVO to write a song cycle that will be premiered by the remarkable soprano Sarah Anderson Tannehill. Two Kansas city premieres by leading women composers Saariaho and Prestini are also on the program, along with the beautiful melodies of Clara Schumann and Amy Beach.
Composer Ingrid Stölzel shares a few insights about her new work : “When I first encountered the poetry of Mohawk-Canadian poet Emily Pauline Johnson (1861–1913), also known in Mohawk as Tekahionwake, I was moved by her unique and strong poetic voice. “Autumn’s Orchestra,” a suite of ten short verses, is a powerful mediation on nature and life. Throughout the poem, Johnson uses vivid visual and auditory imagery as well as symbolism, which inspired my own musical imagination and became a driving force behind my setting.”
