ABOUT THE EVENT
We are excited to present a delightful evening of orchestral music—a program of musical homages filled with humor, exuberance, and contemporary “pop” influences. Join us for an engaging performance featuring Schubert’s celebrated Symphony No. 5, Alfred Schnittke’s playful Moz-Art à la Haydn, and the premiere of Sri Lankan–born Canadian, multi-award-winning composer Dinuk Wijeratne’s Two Pop Songs on Antique Poems.
Inspired and captivated by Mozart, Schubert wrote his Fifth Symphony with luminous charm and classical grace, once exclaiming, “O Mozart! Immortal Mozart! what countless impressions of a brighter, better life hast thou stamped upon our souls!” Schnittke, equally drawn to Mozart and Haydn’s wit and quirkiness, composed his theatrical tribute as a joyful, tongue-in-cheek reimagining that delights with surprise and humor. The highlight of the evening is Wijeratne’s imaginative new work, inspired by medieval and Romantic poetry, where vintage texts meet loops, grooves, and pop-inflected melodies—creating a compelling collision of old…
